Combining narrative, music, and painting, Slow Stories is a collaboration between Bette A. and Brian Eno, based on Bette A.’s short story collection of the same name.
For the vinyl, Brian Eno’s ambient music accompanies Bette A.’s voice as she tells two stories from the book—"The Endless House” and “The Other Village.” Together, the artists have painted 444 individual paintings to accompany each book and record in the bundle.
Each bundle includes:
Original painting on canvas board, by Bette A. and Brian Eno, numbered and signed by both artists (20 cm x 20 cm)
2 Slow Stories vinyl record (12-inch, white vinyl, with gatefold jacket featuring original music from Brian Eno and narration by Bette A.)
Slow Stories by Bette A. (Jacketed Hardcover, 176 pages)
This is a strictly limited edition of 444 bundles.
The artists’s proceeds of the sale of the bundle will go to their charities: The Heroines! Movement, a global storytelling movement around women role models, co-founded by Bette; and Earth Percent, a charity that channels funds from the music industry to organizations that do the most impactful work around the climate emergency, co-founded by Brian.
‘..relaxed and indeed almost meditative, there is a sustained brightness in these two pieces that reinforces the combined level of engagement in their creation. (Grade: A-)’ (The Vinyl District)
'An understated collection that feels both timeless and prophetic' (Kirkus)
‘There is an emphasis on slowness here, and the combination of words and music leave one wishing that Eno had created atmospheric soundscapes for all of Bette A’s vividly enchanting Slow Stories.’ (Buzz Magazine)
‘As one would expect from Eno, his moody accompaniment — a wholly supportive, extended-chord/note soundtrack exactly tailored to the task at hand — perfectly complements Bette A.’s inflective narratives, just as intended. You’ll find that the volume level of her narration fluctuates every few lines — sometimes tapering off, sometimes whispery, sometimes moving more outfront at centerstage — all choices of which were no mere accidents. You’ll find nuance after nuance upon repeat listens as you absorb the intent and content of the respective narratives on each side.’ (Analog Planet)
‘Truly captivating, the lethargic pace amps the eeriness of the two tales, both revolving around two young female protagonists curious to explore beyond the boundaries of what others can perceive. In “The Endless House”, a young girl accesses parts of a relentlessly growing residence while others are denied; in “The Other Village”, a young girl roams beyond the borders of her town to find a foreign village she is too scared to enter.’ (TopShelfMusicMag)
In the context of their limited edition vinyl album 2 Slow Stories, Brian Eno and Bette A have created a series of 444 unique paintings.
